Women Development



1. Women Empowerment Programme:

This programme was launched in 25 GPs Harihar, Honnali & Davangere Taluk, Davangere District and in Belgaum district in the year 2002-03 in coordination with Government of Karnataka, Department of Women & Child Development, Government of India, Ministry of Labor and Employment and Public Contribution. The key features of this programme were being: Organizing women into Groups, promoting self reliance, discouraging gender discrimination, facilitating women participation in decision making process at the Gram Panchayat level and enhancing income and earning capacity of women by forming SHGs and networks. Protection of Rights of the women those victims of domestic violence, empowerment of women especially dalits, adivasi and minority communities were the main objectives.

The following activities are been conducted with the main objectives mentioned above and our organisation is striving for continuous improvement in our programmes by adopting modern methods, technology and programmes and programs which are very much need for current scenario. In cooperation with Life Insurance Cooperation Program, insurance has been done for rural and urban poor women

2. Integrated Development programme for Teenage girls:

MARSS-K conducted Workshop on Awareness of Health for Teenage Girl Children under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Department of Education, Government of Karnataka in the year 2006-12. This programme was conducted in Honnali and Harihara Taluk of Davangere District Karnataka. Residential workshops was conducted for three days for Teenage Girls of around 50 teenage girls about maintaining cleanliness, nutrition requirement, maintaining good health and giving awareness about challenges and problems faced by them in the society and availability of legal aid and rights for them. For necessary girls, counseling has been provided. This programme was inaugurated in Honnali by Smt. Shailaja Priyadarshini , KAS, Tahsildar, Honnali and in Sasvehalli by Sri. Renukacharya, MLA in Honnali and in Harihar Taluk Sri. Ramachandra, Principal and Deputy Director of DIET. Dr. P K Gayathri Devi, ZP member, Davangere presided this programme as resource person.

3. Slum Samudhyada Mahila Jaagruta Vedike

MARSS-K formed Slum Samudhyada Mahila Jaagruta Vedike at Harihar City which works on Social Security and Rights of the slum dwellers and is regularly following up the same since 2002 in declared slums like Mahatma Gandhi Slum Area, Halekacheri Slum Area, Gandhinagara Slum Area, Goodshed area in Harihar City, Davangere. This programme was inaugurated by Sri. Hosamane Pundalik, Senior Judge, JMF, Harihar and in the presence of chief guests, Sri. N G Katawate, CDPO, Sri. Vijay Kumar M Santosh, Circle Police Inspector, Harihar, Sri. Ibrahim, Labour Officer, Sri. Gangappa, President, Bar Association, Harihar, Sri. B Nagraj, Advocate and Sri. D Hemanthraj, Counselor, CMC,Harihar.

This forum will empower these women in fighting for their rights on their own with the help of this forum which includes women of different community in slum areas as members and MARSSK personnel being the convener. A programme on basic needs and the facilities like health , nutrition, education, water facilities, sanitation facilities etc were instigated. The SHGs so formed is linked with Financial inclusion i.e., bank accounts and regular follow-up of the same is done. 1562 families were benefited from this programme.

4. Self Help Groups Promotion Programme

MARSS-K has formed 2,561 Self Help Groups (SHGs) of slum dwellers and women of BPL Families in urban and rural areas till now, out of which 200 SHGs were formed in the name of Self Help Promotion Institutions under NABARD in Harapanahalli and Harihar Taluk. Additionally under Integrated Water Shed Management Project, 362 Women SHGs were formed in Mundaragi Taluk, Gadag District, 222 SHGs were formed for women slum dwellers, 52 SHGs under SJSRY and remaining SHGs were formed by MARSS-K. Around 80% of these SHGs located in rural area. Economic empowerment through sustainable Income generation Activities (IGAs) were conducted and enhanced with credit linkage for 85% of SHGs. Materials for account management and book keeping is provided by MARSS-K and a network of these SHGs is formed for further regulation and monitoring. Through this network, awareness programme for pregnant women, nutrition and balanced diet of women and child, maternity health violence against women, women property rights, legal Awareness to women, safety and self defense, counseling etc were constantly discussed and camps were been instigated and trainings are given.

5. Women Awareness Camp

Women Awareness Camp was conducted by MARSS-K supported by Social Welfare Advisory Board, Karnataka. Under this programme, rural poor landless women were given residential awareness camp for 10 days on November 2007 at Harihar Taluk, Davangere district. This programme was inaugurated by Sri. G. Ramesh, Police Circle Inspector, Resource Perosn, Dr. Chennaveer, HOD, Department of Social Work, Davangere University, Sri. Vemanna, Labour inspector, Harihar circle, Smt. K P Sunanda, activist, Smt. Ali Saloma, social worker and Smt. Manjula, advocate, dr. Sharada Shetty, Gynocologist also present in this programnme. Smt. Annapurnamma, Programme coordinator, underwent training under Hindu Seva Pratishtana and the same was replicated in this programme.

6. Widows Network- Karnataka

MARSS-K initiated this programme for the first time in Kakkaragolla Gram Panchayat, Davangere Taluk, Davangere District which was inaugurated by Sri. Gutti Jambunath, CEO, Zilla Panchayat, Davangere in the presence of Sri Sri Chandrashekharashivacharya Mahaswamiji, Puramatt, Avaragolla village. The chief guest of the programme being Mr.Vasudev, Deputy Director, Department of Women and Child Development, Davangere District.
For the first time in Karnataka, widows’ network was formed by identifying the widows, forming widows’ network from the grass root level to state level. In this programme, the widows were enlightened with social security, counseling, higher education for discontinued, remarriage for interested widows, legal aid for property disputes and knowledge on their property rights, consciousness about their health etc. The main Intension of creation of Widows network is to make an integrated development of these widows by sustainable development of each other coordinated by themselves. The membership for this network is provided to Divorcees, transgender, spinsters, like minded Community based organisations.
