1. Awareness programme on Birth and death Registration

This programme was started in 2011 at Davangere district in coordination with Spoorthy organization, District administration and Department of Education. Orientation training and workshop on Awareness about need for birth and death certificate and procedures to be followed for registration of birth and death certificate was conducted for officials of Gram Panchayat, Taluk Administration, City Municipal Corporations and CBOs. This programme was accompanied by poster and sticker campaign.

2. Workshop and awareness campaign on Right to Food

One day Workshop on ‘Right to Food’ was organized on October 13, 2008 in Harihar Taluk, Davangere District for SHG and laborers federation in association with District level NGO network and MARSS-K took the complete responsibility of implementing the programme in Harihar Taluk. Various issues, especially, delay in issuing ration card, lacuna in identifying eligible beneficiaries, irregularities in implementation of NREGA was discussed and a strategy was formalized to put pressure on Government for the measures to rectify. 150 members were participated in the workshop representing laborers, SHG members, NGOs, physically disabled etc. A follow up workshop was organized on December 28, 2008 in Bangalore to review the strategy and follow up action in which representatives of RFC-Karnataka, FEVORD-K, and Bangalore were participated. MARSS-K facilitated in finalizing specific agenda, time bound action program to be implemented.

MARSS-K supported Rally and Dharani by organizing Right to Food Campaign in Davangere on August 15, 2009. More than 2,000 women participated from different corner of the State and were gathered at Cubban Park, Bangalore. President of MARSS-K made a press meet to stress on inclusion of families into the ration card system, problems in distributing the subsidized ration given to the beneficiaries like, controlling black marketing of subsidized food grains, distribution of specific food grains based on the region of consumption, increasing the quality of food etc. Sri. S A Ravindranath, Minister of Agriculture, GoK and District in-charge, Dr. K. Amaranarayan, IAS Deputy Commissioner of Davangere District received our request and gave assurance to fulfill the demands made in Dharani.

3. Programme on Human Rights and Dalit issues

MARSS-K conducted Awareness Programme on Human Rights and Dalit Issues in the year 2002 in Davangere. Awareness on possible ways of preventing atrocities made on Dalits and exploitation of dalits were made by enlightening them with the rights and different government schemes which are specially there for them. Vichara Sankeerna program will be conducted every year on the day of Ambedhkar Jayanati and Buddha poornima to have interactive session on various issues faced by Dalits day to day life in the society and suggestive interventions to be made to tackle the problems. MARSS-K is constantly giving support socially, economically, legally to dalits to promote and protect their Human Rights.

4. Programme on enhancing capacities and leadership for dalit women

Fourth National Leadership Training Institute For Dalit Women in South India was conducted in Kerala in 2009, by National Federation for Dalit Women supported by CDLM and FORD Foundation, New Delhi. Smt. Sangeetha, Secretary, MARSS-K, Smt. Jayashree, Project coordinator, MARSS-K participated in this programme and was executed the same in Davangere District as district convener and had taken the responsibility of South Karnataka in cooperation with by Dr. Ruth Manorama, National Convenor, Mrs. Prema Shanta Kumari, Convener, South India, Mrs. Resley Abraham, convener, kerala. 250 women are been trained under this programme by our organization.

5. Awareness Programme for construction Labours and domestic workers

Construction workers and domestic workers who are working in informal sector were identified and survey was done along with formation of labours’ network – ‘Sri Harihareswara Construction Labour Association’ with President of MARSS-K being the convener of it. Labour Identity Card from Construction Labour Welfare Board and Department of Labour, was issued. In cooperation with Taluk legal service authorities, an awareness programme along with legal aid camp and Health camp was conducted on the eve of Labor Day which was first inaugurated by Justice Hosamani Pundalik, JMFC, Harihar , Sri.Nagraj, President Bar Association, Harihar and Sri. N.C Venkataraju, Magistrate, Harihar in the year 2006 in Harihar city. The same programme is replicated every year on labours day.

6. Employment Generation Programme

Before NREG Act came into force, MARSS-K led a campaign on Right to work in Davangere, Bellary, Haveri, Darwad, Chitradurga districts. After implementation of NREGS Scheme, MARSS- K took the first initiative in reaching this programme to rural unemployed workers in Belludi, Anagavadi, Kondajji, Sarathi and Devarabelikere Gram Panchayats of Harihar Taluk, Davangere district. This programme was implemented with the activities like registration under MGNREGS (2008), getting job cards, opening Bank Account, filling forms for job requisition; Involving community in planning work to be executed, social audit and reporting.

A forum of rural labourers, ‘Grameena Koole Karmikara Vedike’ was setup for the integrated development of laborers and enhance social security of labourers. Regular follow-up of this forum is done by MARSS-K providing necessary support. Observing the success of this project, CEO of Zilla Panchayat, Sri. Gutti Jambunath called for a meeting cum workshop with District level and aligned department officials and all Gram Panchayat PDOs and discussed about effective implementation of NREGA in rural areas with the involvement of NGOs, rural labourers. A resolution was passed regarding implementation in all Gram Panchayats making MARSS-K as Nodal Agency. This programme was supported by Sri. B Nijalingappa, IFS, CEO, ZP, Davangere, Sri. J T Ramakrishna, Programme Officer, ZP Davangere and Sri. Shadaksharappa, Deputy Secretary, ZP. Davangere.

7. Sustainable livelihood Activities

During the year 2006-07 we have extended our activities to Belgaum District on the issue of sustainable livelihood for dalit family’s .Currently we are working with 710 families in 5 villages of Khanapur Taluk, Belgaum District .We have additionally formed 16 SHGs and strengthened 45 SHGs formed in the previous years.

All the groups have involved in saving and credit activity. All the 61 Groups have opened bank accounts and regularly performing savings and transaction with banks .This has increased their confidence and belongingness by MARSS-K Belgaum District coordinator Smt. P.B. Kammar monitoring these activities.

These trainings have contributed in understanding the importance of health, hygiene education and rights of their children. Slowly realizing their rights over the property and natural resources, women are taking lead role in tackling developmental and social issues, namely– Anti liquor, Ration card demanding for better health care at Primary Health Center (PHCs), prevention of child marriages and enrolment of children to formal schools, demanding for proper implementation of Anganwadi centers etc, has enhanced the comprehensive development of the society. MARSS-K organized various Skill Development Programmmes in the areas of Food Processing, Vermi Composting, Agarbatti Production, and Handicrafts Tailoring & Embroidery and Computer Literacy.

8. SAMARTHA Initiative Program for rag-pickers Social security and integrated development

Under the jurisdiction of BBMP-BENGALURU South, MARSS-K took an initiative programme for Rag-pickers about Awareness on Social security, integrated development and sustainable livelihood. The awareness programme was followed by initiating other income generation activities for them. This programme is an ongoing programme. The programme started by conducting baseline survey of rag pickers from selected area, identifying the beneficiaries, formation of SHGs and providing multi training on disposal and recycling of wastes and other IGA activities. This programme was supported by Mr. Rajaneesh Goel, IAS, Commissioner, BBMP, Mrs. Shalini Rajaneesh, IAS Principal Secretary, Department of Women and Child and Dr. K.V. Trilokachandra IAS, Additional Commissioner, BBMP, Bengaluru-South zone.

9. National City Maker Caravan

It is a national level campaign for urban homeless. In this programme, urban homeless people are considered as ‘National City makers’. In recent years, globalization, urbanization has become the most important and hence semi skilled and skilled workers from rural areas move towards the urban areas to fulfill the hunger of urbanization. With increase in urbanization, the population density in urban areas has been steeply increased with increase in need for homes. Hence forth, migrants started living in foot paths, below the flyovers, railway stations etc. As per Supreme Court order, Unique ID should be provided to every citizens of India and every homeless should be rehabilitated and resettlement should be done.

Hence campaign was started by IGSSS to pressurize the government to come up with the law for rehabilitation and resettlement of urban homeless and MARSS-K took a lead of campaign in Karnataka by organizing the camps and unifying urban homeless people in Bengaluru, Tumkur, Belgaum, Kalburgi, Hubli-Dharwar, Mysore, Chitradurga cities. Looking at the success of this programme, Dr. K.V Thrilok Chandra IAS, Commisioner, Hubli-Darwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC), Mr.Naregal, Special Officer, HDMC and K. Jayprakesh, Executive Engineer, HDMC provided an opportunity to survey in Hubli-Darwad district. Around 2300 urban homeless were identified during the survey and opened rehabilitation centre with food and accommodation.

10. Sports & cultural inclusion programme

To promote art and culture and inculcate Integrity and patriotism, our organization is conducting sports events for youth of Bellary & Davangere District. With the objective of identifying the young talents at grass root level and to provide them an ample of opportunities and motivate them to showcase their talents in sports at National and international level, MARSS-K organized sports events and tournaments, delivering prizes and medals and Certificates. The contribution for this programme was made by SHG’s. The Sports and Cultural Programmes and National festivals are now voluntarily conducted annually by Community.

Kite festival was conducted which was inaugurated by Dr.N.C Venkat Raj KAS, Tahsildar, Harihar and in the presence of Mr. Lokesh, Child Development Officer, Department of Women and Child Development, Mr. Oblappa, Guardian, MARSS-K, Mrs. Lalithamma Chandrashekhar, President, Makkala Sahitya Parishad., Sri NM Chandrashekaraiah Freedom fighter, and S .Ramappa President CMC,Harihar .
